Crooked Creek Baptist Church has been doing picnics well for more than a century, and so it is no wonder that our picnics continue to be so popular with present members, former members, invited guests, and anyone else who joins us. Based on the clothing worn, the photo above was probably taken sometime between 1890-1910. We've been here for a long time, and we've constantly reinvented ourselves. But from what we can figure out from really old written and even photographic accounts, we've always been welcoming, and we've always done food well. We're open to change in lots of areas, but we also preserve our traditions when they've stood the test of time.

We hope you'll join us at our next such event. We have a community cookout planned for February 28th, 2018, starting at 11:30am. It won't look anything like the photo above...but you should definitely click it and take a closer look!
Mark Pittman!Crooked Creek Baptist Church welcomes our new minister, Rev. Mark Pittman!

Pastor Mark is a native of Ohio, who first came to Indiana in 1985. He traces his personal commitment to following Jesus back to his parents’ example and upbringing, and his decision at age 5 to ask Jesus to be “King of my heart.” At age 17, he began to sense a call to ministry, and after studies at Bethel University (BA in Biblical Studies) and Bethel Theological Seminary (MDiv in Old Testament/ Pastoral Leadership), in December of 1985 he was ordained as an American Baptist minister.

He previously served in a bivocational ministry pastoring the Arlington Heights Baptist Church, and serving as chaplain at the Community Rehabilitation Hospital and other hospitals in the Community Healthcare Network.

He and his wife Rita consider themselves a team. They have four adult children and nine grandchildren, all of whom live in the Indianapolis area. It was family connections that led them back to Indiana after several years during which Pastor Mark served as the Pastor of the Open Door Baptist Church in Tomah, Wisconsin. Before that, he was involved in pastoral ministry in churches in Mitchell, Monticello, Mooresville, and Indianapolis, all in Indiana.

Pastor Mark’s ministry focuses on developing disciples. As he puts it, being a disciple means “KNOWING Jesus, GROWING in Jesus, CARING like Jesus, and SHARING Jesus with others.”
Much of the content of that article can be found on the blog of the Alban Institute. Among the things that are mentioned are five themes that the church discerned as constants in the congregation over the years:
Today, Crooked Creek Baptist Church is located at 5540 N.
Michigan Road in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is a historic, long-established
congregation in a stable urban neighborhood. The church is attended by people
who travel less than a mile, and who travel more than ten, to reach the
building, but with the majority living 2-5 miles away. The church is diverse
ethnically and in terms of the age of members, as well as socio-economically,
theologically, politically, in members’ musical preferences, and in a variety
of other ways. While this makes it a challenging congregation to lead, our
strong sense of unity in our love of and service for God in Christ, and our
willingness to listen to and learn from one another, cause us to regard the
fact that we embody this aspect of the American Baptist denomination as a whole
as a strength rather than a weakness. The church regards its pastor as one who
leads above all by teaching the congregation (above all from the Scriptures
through preaching), providing vision, and who provides visitation and
counselling to those with special needs such as illnesses.

Crooked Creek Baptist Church has been in existence since
June 10th 1837, when the fourteen founding members came together in
a small log schoolhouse to establish a new church in the area which, at the
time, was six miles north of Indianapolis. Madison Hume, one of those original
members, was chosen to serve as the first pastor, and (with some breaks) he
served in that role until 1861. The other founding members were Joseph Watts,
Patrick, Jane, and Esther Hume, David and Eliza Stoops, John and Asah Kinsley,
John and Rachel Dunn, Samuel and Martha Hutchinson, and Morley Stewart. The
last named individual was African-American, and the church has remained a
multicultural and diverse community ever since. In 1840, the congregation
purchased a plot of ground north of the schoolhouse and built a frame structure
for the church to meet in. A second building, erected in 1856, was built across
the road (to the north of the present building). This structure was altered and
enlarged many times and in numerous ways. In 1887, the church called W. H.
Craig as their minister, who was then a student at Franklin College and a
licensed minister, and who served the church in a bivocational capacity. Over
the course of the remainder of the 19th century seats, a belfry, and
a furnace were added to the church building. By 1909 the church had grown to
133 members, and over the remainder of the 20th century the church
membership would increase further still.

September 1937. Our Centennial anniversary was celebrated June 12 and 13 of
1937 and it was determined that it was the appropriate time to consider a
larger building for the growing congregation. Ground was purchased south of the
old church (where our present church stands) for a price of $982.50. World War

ground breaking ceremony for the new building was held in August 1950 under the

the cornerstone was laid. On July 19, 1954, a farewell service was held in the
old church and on July 25, 1954 the first service was held in the new building
with Pastor Crafton delivering the message. The new building was dedicated in
October 1954 in a service that remembered the fourteen founders. In March 1955,
Rev. Orval Sutton accepted the call to become our pastor. Over the course of
the 1960s, an extensive education wing was added to the building, in which at
present Sunday school classes meet before worship services, and which during
the week houses the Bright Promises preschool, which the church established in
1991.

Rev. Sutton served as pastor across many decades and the
church flourished under his leadership. In 1981 Michael Snow came to Crooked
Creek as Associate Pastor and Youth Director. Rev. Snow was ordained in the
Church on May 16, 1982. In June of 1987, we observed our sesquicentennial,
celebrating 150 years of heritage. Crooked Creek Baptist Church is the third
oldest church in Marion County, as was noted by mayor William H. Hudnut III
when he proclaimed June 14th, 1987 as Crooked Creek Baptist Church Sesquicentennial
Day. In March 1995, Rev. Orval Sutton retired after 40 years of ministry at
Crooked Creek. In April, 1995, Rev. Michael Snow became our new Senior Pastor
after serving 14 years as our associate. Under the leadership of Rev. Snow, the
church continued to grow and prosper. In January of 1996, Rev. David Brown was
called to be Associate Pastor. In 1999, David and his wife Susan felt the call
to the foreign mission field. They were commissioned in June of 1999, and
served four years as our special missionaries at the Kodiakanal International
School in India. The church has also sent out several other missionary
families, and supports and retains a close relationship with many more. In 1998
we ranked in the top 50 of over 5,500 American Baptist Churches in the nation
in our support of United Missions.

In May of 1999, Crooked Creek called Mike Thompson to be

Bengtson was called to be Associate Pastor in Music and Worship. Rev. Thompson
was later ordained in the church, and Rev. Bengston served as interim pastor for
a period after the departure of Rev. Snow. During the years 2001-2004, Crooked
Creek assisted Dr. Thiaawr Bawihrin, a Burmese pastor who came to study in the
U.S., resettle over 100 refugees from Burma in Indianapolis. During that time.
Dr. Bawihrin established the Chin Baptist Church for these refugees. In 2003,
the church felt led to began a Hispanic ministry. In October, 2003, Rev. Gregorio

meet on our premises.

development of a number of new ministries which emerged organically from the
desire of members of the congregation to serve our local community. These
included the provision of school supplies to the local Crooked Creek Elementary

The membership of the historic English-speaking congregation
is itself diverse, including people from different parts of the country and
from other countries. Most members self-identify as white, but the congregation
includes individuals who self-identify as African-American, Hispanic, and
Native American. It includes people all across the economic and political
spectrums – there are members who earn less than $25,000/year, and members who
earn more than $100,000/year. There are members with very different theological
and ethical viewpoints, to say nothing of different musical preferences. In a
workshop that was supposed to identify our core values and bedrock beliefs, we
found that the one thing that was a universal for all participants was grace.
While the pastor at that time, Tom Bartley, had hoped we would produce a longer
list, there is something beautiful about the fact that we not only identified
the thread that united our theologically, socially, and ethnically diverse
congregation, but that the unifying thread is grace.

In August 2015, the church undertook some much needed
renovations to the sanctuary, including the installation of new carpeting,
adjustment of the pews to make accessible space for wheelchairs and other
electric vehicles, as well as repainting. Our church building is a two-level
stone structure on Michigan Road (Highway 421) in Indianapolis. A separate
garage with a porch is also located on the property, which was previously used
for parking the church van, when we had one. In 1994 the church purchased an
additional five acres immediately north of the property for possible future use,
part of which was subsequently sold to allow the development of the property
across Michigan Road from the church for commercial purposes. Crooked Creek
flows through the church property. The land to the west of the creek is a
wooded area which at present is undeveloped, but could be included in future
plans. We also have a sand volleyball court and a playground for use by our
preschool, Sunday School classes, youth, and young adults. The educational wing
contains classrooms on both levels. We have a church library, four offices, a
large dining/fellowship hall with adjoining kitchen, as well as the fireside
room for smaller meetings which also has a kitchen.

I'm not sure what to call the service that we've put together for next Sunday at Crooked Creek Baptist Church. But the service will feature a lot of music that we've never performed in church before, as well as several songs that we have included at least once. We'll start with "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and end with "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun." Can you figure out the connection between those two songs? If so, you'll appreciate this service - and if not, you need to be there to find out what it is.

In between, we'll have songs by Peter Gabriel, Kansas, Styx, and U2. And in connection with most of the songs, Dr. James F. McGrath will be sharing some thoughts about the artificial distinction between "sacred" and "secular" music, how Christians can follow the example of Paul the apostle in using music and lyrics from beyond the church as a bridge for communication, as well as how to be open to learning from that music when it highlights things that the church has been neglecting.

As you can see, the carpeting is installed in the sanctuary and the re-designed pew placement is set and anchored. The pews from the back have been removed and work has already begun on a new visitor center. The pews in the sanctuary, which were set at random distances from one another, have been re-set with a 14" spacing between each row, making access to them much easier. Additionally, several spaces designed specifically for wheelchair/electric vehicles have also been created to make the sanctuary more friendly to people with physical challenges.

Upon completion of the Visitor/Welcome Center we will re-dedicate the sanctuary to God's glory!
I wanted to let you know of a Tutor training event for possible ESL (English as Second Language) tutors that is coming up in the month of February. Indy Reads is sponsoring training on the evenings of February 17,19,24, and 26 from 6-9 p.m. All 4 of these sessions must be attended. There is a cost associated with the training of $25. Crooked Creek Baptist has received a grant to cover the costs for the ESL tutor training. To receive this benefit you must contact Tom Bartley to coordinate registrations.

I know that a few of you have expressed an interest in helping with this next step in our ministry. I personally view this as an extension of what takes place with our Manna ministry. Instead of just feeding hungry people, we will be helping them to take care of their own selves. Improved English opens the door to better and more diverse employment. It will improve their chance for furthering their own education and that of their children. It offers a different kind of hope that lasts beyond the temporary feeling of a full stomach provided at Manna. I believe it is taking the command to "give them something to eat" further along the plan Jesus had when he first issued this command to his disciples.

Friends,

I write this as we are about to begin the month of my
favorite phrase, NOVEMBERSHIP! Please,
bear with me.

Many years ago I left my home church because of frustration
over the church as an institution over the church as a vehicle for service. I was disenfranchised by the people whom I
perceived as those who thought church attendance was only meant to be a
blessing for themselves instead of this and a call to become a blessing to
others. I returned to church life, and
eventually became a pastor because I came to believe the only way to change
this truth was to become involved in the solution. In my years of service, I have come to
discover that not everyone has been institutionalized by the church- there
remain devoted servants of God. Even
though my perception has changed, I still believe this is a problem the “Church”
faces. I have had so many misguided
conversations about what the church needs to do to survive and not enough
conversations about what God would have our local church do.

In my time as pastor of Crooked Creek Baptist (6 years and
counting) I believe that we have begun to address this important issue. Our ministry to hungry people in our
community through Manna meals, our partnership with 2 separate communities
worshiping in our building (Congolese refugees and a Hispanic community), our
support and work in local and international missions is revealing a community
of believers dedicated to making a difference by living the gospel message to
declare the love of God in word AND deed.

And I long to share this community with you. I believe that you will be blessed by any association
you have with us. I believe that we have
much to offer you and your family and I also believe that YOU have gifts and
skills which will increase the diverse set of interests, services, and
ministries we can offer. It is why I am
inviting you to join us for this special month of Novembership! We will be talking about this call to serve,
about the Presence of God in our lives, and worship as a response to this
Presence.

Now, I know for some of you I might be asking you to drive a
distance. Crooked Creek Baptist worships
on Michigan Rd, just south of Kessler Blvd every Sunday at 10:45 a.m. But I believe that the experience of worship,
the power of our community, and the practiced love of God will be more valuable
than the time and gasoline consumed to join us.
I also know that some of you might have an affiliation with another
church- and I need to be clear that this letter is not an effort to derail your
commitment to that community.

But if you, like myself, have become frustrated by the
church as an institution and are seeking an opportunity to talk/think/ and
practice faith as service and ministry then I invite you to come and check out
the ministries of Crooked Creek Baptist.
If you have not been attending a church recently then I invite you to
try it out again or for the first time.
I truly believe that we have a chance to completely transform the lives
of so many people and you can help us in this process. Not only will we be able to impact the lives
of so many people in need but we will also ourselves be changed as we serve.

Friends, this is not just a letter to encourage you to come
to church for this month where I use (and abuse) the phrase Novembership… This is what I believe is the highest calling
we have as human beings. I hope you will
consider what more you can be in your life by serving this Loving God.

Thanks,

There will also be a small food pantry that anyone is welcome to visit. Around the church we call this program Manna. We offer it because we believe that God calls us to serve the needs of our community and many in our local community struggle to provide enough food for their families.

But its only a symptom indicative of a greater need. begging on street corners or in medians alongside the road. We advise you to use caution in sharing this

We anticipate their formal presentation to begin around 12:30- so if you are unable to join us for lunch you may still hear from this the Bonilla-Giovanetti family at this time. Lunch will be a baked potato bar from McAlisters and will cost around $5-6 per person. It is important that you let us know if you plan to join us this Thursday for lunch by Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. so that we may plan accordingly. We hope you will be able to join us for this very personal time with this Missionary Family!
